Best Tips to Get Ready to Start a New Job
Best Tips to Get Ready to Start a New Job Best Tips to Get Ready to Start a New Job Congratulations! You have a new job. Now its time to prepare to get off to a great start with your new employer. When you receive and accept a job offer, there are a lot of practical things you should do before your first day to allow for a smooth transition. How to Get Ready to Start a New Job Here is a list of things to consider doing before starting your new job. You might not have time to do all of these things before you begin work, particularly if you are asked to begin right away. However, you can go through this list and select the essential tasks to complete first and then accomplish the others during the first couple of weeks of work. Make Necessary Household Arrangements You may need to arrange for childcare, depending on the age of your children and the hours that you work. If you decide to hire a sitter, try to find a sitter before you start your job. Ideally, have that sitter meet with you and your kids at least once or twice before you start work to make sure he or she is a good fit. If you need to find a daycare or afterschool program, you should also try to find a place that is a good fit before beginning your job. This way, you donât have to scramble to find new childcare once youâve begun your job. Of course, you may not have a lot of time before you start your job, in which case you might have to continue to find the right form of childcare while youâre working. If there are any other things you need to be taken care of at home while youâre at the office- if you have a pet that needs to be walked and fed, or plants that need to be watered- be sure to hire someone to do these tasks before you begin work. Plan Your Commute Make sure you know exactly how to get to your new office, and how long it will take. If you are taking public transportation, make sure you know any and all stops and transfers you will need to take. Practice going to work one or two times before work starts so you will know how long the commute is (be sure to leave around the time you plan to leave for work, so you can account for any traffic). You might want to come up with a backup route too, just in case, traffic is particularly bad one day. On your first day, leave 10 minutes earlier than you think you need to- just in case. Plan Your Outfit Choose your outfit for the first day of work a few days in advance. This will give you time to wash, iron, dry clean, or hem any clothing items. If you are unsure of how you should dress on the first day, you can call your companyâs human resources representative for advice. Remember, it is best to dress on the conservative side for the first couple of weeks of work. Once you get a feel for the office culture, you can begin to dress somewhat more casually, if that is what your officemates do. Make Any Appointments If you can help it, you donât want to be asking for time off from work to go to doctorsâ appointments in the first couple weeks of work. Therefore, you should try to schedule any upcoming doctorsâ appointments for before your new job begins. If you already have an appointment scheduled that falls within the first couple weeks of work, you might want to call and see if they can fit you in earlier. If your insurance provider is going to change with your new job, now would also be the time to make sure your current doctors will take your new insurance. Otherwise, you will have to either start looking for new doctors, or see if you have out-of-network coverage on your new insurance. Also, think of any other appointments you want to make to ensure you look and feel your best on your first day. Consider making an appointment with a hairdresser if you havenât had a haircut in a while. You might even consider getting a manicure or pedicure (no bright colors or crazy patterns) if you like painting your nails- anything that will make you feel confident on day one! Get Plenty of Sleep If youâve had a slightly irregular sleep schedule during your job-searching period, now is the time to get back into a regular sleep pattern. Start going to bed and waking up at the times you plan to do so for work. Ideally, you should begin getting into this pattern two weeks before you begin your job. However, if you donât have that much time, just start as soon as you can. Youâll feel much more rested on that first day of work, and youâll be less worried about sleeping through your alarm! Get Your Materials Together Make sure you have all the materials you will need for day one. Get a notepad and pen to bring the first week, so you can take notes on all the introductory information you will likely receive (or, if you prefer taking notes on your smartphone, you can do so instead). Bring all the information you need to complete new hire paperwork if you havent done it prior to starting the job. If you are unsure about whether people tend to buy or bring their lunch, pack a lunch for day one, just in case. If there is anything else that your boss or human resources representative told you to bring to work, be sure you have it. Also, make sure you have a professional-looking bag or briefcase for all your things. Working from Home If you are working from home, make sure you have all the tools you will need in your office. These tools might include a computer, printer, scanner, telephone, pens, and paper, etc. Clean and arrange your office space before your first day so you can start work with an organized workspace. Research the Company With all the little practical tasks you have to do before your first day, itâs easy to forget about what you can do to prepare for the job itself. Before the first day, spend a little time refreshing yourself on the organization and its mission. This task can be as simple as skimming over the companyâs website one more time. If you have a friend who knows someone at the company, you might also consider asking your friend to set up a coffee date for you and your future coworker. This way, you can get to know at least one friendly face at work before your first day. Make the Best Impression Its important to make the best impression starting with your first day on the job. Review these tips and strategies for successfully starting a new job before you start the next step of your career.

This is what the best teams and families do 3 rituals from research
This is what the best teams and families do 3 rituals from research This is what the best teams and families do 3 rituals from research What makes a team effective? Is it trust? Cooperation? âChemistryâ?You have no idea. Donât worry - neither did I. Kinda terrifying, isnât it? Weâre all part of friendships, work teams, and families and we donât really know what builds trust, unity, or makes a group effective.Luckily, one very smart guy went looking for answers â¦Bestselling author Dan Coyle spent the past four years studying world class teams to see what makes them great. He reviewed the research, sat down with Pixar, spent time with the Navy SEALs - heck, he even looked at the best crew of jewel thieves out there. His excellent new book is The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups. He found there were three key elements they all had in common that boosted trust, cooperation, motivation and overall performance. And theyâre going to surprise you.Letâs get to it â¦1. Build safetySafety is a lot like oxygen - you really donât think about it unless itâs missing. And by the same toke n, almost nobody deliberately sets out to create it.But itâs really hard to create trust or work together effectively when you feel like youâre going to be judged, scolded or fired for saying or doing the wrong thing. So what produces a feeling of safety? Not words or policies or assurances. Alex Pentland at MIT says itâs âbelonging cues.âTheyâre a cluster of little behaviors you probably donât pay all that much attention to. But theyâre the little things people do when they care about and respect one another. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Belonging cues are behaviors that create safe connection in groups. They include, among others, proximity, eye contact, energy, mimicry, turn taking, attention, body language, vocal pitch, consistency of emphasis, and whether everyone talks to everyone else in the group.Pentland found they were the number one predictor of team performance - more predictive than intelligence, skill or leadership. In f act, you can ignore all the information exchanged by a group and know how well theyâre going to do just by looking at belonging cues. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Itâs possible to predict performance by ignoring all the informational content in the exchange and focusing on a handful of belonging cuesâ¦Why are these little innocuous behaviors so powerful? Because theyâre operating deep down at the neuroscience level. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:When you receive a belonging cue, the amygdala switches roles and starts to use its immense unconscious neural horsepower to build and sustain your social bonds. It tracks members of your group, tunes in to their interactions, and sets the stage for meaningful engagement. In a heartbeat, it transforms from a growling guard dog into an energetic guide dog with a single-minded goal: to make sure you stay tightly connected with your people. On brain scans, this moment is vi vid and unmistakable, as the amygdala lights up in an entirely different way. âThe whole thing flips,â says Jay Van Bavel, social neuroscientist at New York University. âThe moment youâre part of a group, the amygdala tunes in to whoâs in that group and starts intensely tracking them. Because these people are valuable to you. They were strangers before, but theyâre on your team now, and that changes the whole dynamic. Itâs such a powerful switch- itâs a big top-down change, a total reconfiguration of the entire motivational and decision-making system.âSo make sure everyone is getting a chance to speak. That people are paying attention to one another and making eye contact. That body language is respectful and everyone feels heard. Donât let anyone be dismissive or interrupt someone else.Whether itâs a boardroom meeting or family dinner, everyone wants to feel like a valued member of a group and that their thoughts carry weight. And thatâs conveyed not only by our voices, but by our bodies as well.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling book here.)So everyone feels safe - but how do we create trust and encourage cooperation?2. Share vulnerabilityNobody wants to look incompetent. Parents donât. Bosses donât. And employees sure donât when the boss is around. But itâs by making ourselves vulnerable that we reveal our humanity. And thatâs what builds connection and trust. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Exchanges of vulnerability, which we naturally tend to avoid, are the pathway through which trusting cooperation is built. So showing vulnerability is step one. But research by Jeff Polzer at Harvard shows thereâs also a vital step two here as well - how team members respond to vulnerability. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Polzer points out that vulnerability is less about the sender than the receiver. âThe second person is the k ey,â he says. âDo they pick it up and reveal their own weaknesses, or do they cover up and pretend they donât have any? It makes a huge difference in the outcome.â Polzer has become skilled at spotting the moment when the signal travels through the group. âYou can actually see the people relax and connect and start to trust. The group picks up the idea and says, âOkay, this is the mode weâre going to be in,â and it starts behaving along those lines, according to the norm that itâs okay to admit weakness and help each other.âAdmitting weakness is so powerful that itâs even done by the last group youâd ever expect to show vulnerability: Navy SEALs.After SEALs complete a mission they do whatâs called an âAfter-Action Review.â And the words most encouraged in the meeting are: âI screwed that up.âFrom The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:AARs happen immediately after each mission and consist of a short meeting in which the team gathe rs to discuss and replay key decisions⦠âItâs got to be safe to talk,â Cooper says. âRank switched off, humility switched on. Youâre looking for that moment where people can say, âI screwed that up.âBy admitting weakness group members learn to trust, to be honest, and to ask for help. And by reviewing their mistakes they improve.Coyle puts it bluntly: âbeing vulnerable together is the only way a team can become invulnerable.â(To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click here.)So weâve got safety and trust. Now how do we get everyone on the same page and motivated?3. Establish purposePurpose is about reminding a group of their shared goal - and it works best when it comes in the form of a story. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Purpose isnât about tapping into some mystical internal drive but rather about creating simple beacons that focus attention and engagement on the shared goal. Successful cu ltures do this by relentlessly seeking ways to tell and retell their story.Where do you start? First talk with your group and establish your priorities. Maybe you think those are clear, obvious, and donât need to be specifiedâ¦Youâre wrong. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:A while back Inc. magazine asked executives at six hundred companies to estimate the percentage of their workforce who could name the companyâs top three priorities. The executives predicted that 64 percent would be able to name them. When Inc. then asked employees to name the priorities, only 2 percent could do so.So name and rank them. How many priorities should you have? Which ones do top teams focus on?From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:Most successful groups end up with a small handful of priorities (five or fewer), and many, not coincidentally, end up placing their in-group relationships â" how they treat one another â" at the top of the list. This reflects the truth that many successful groups realize: Their greatest project is building and sustaining the group itself. If they get their own relationships right, everything else will follow. And then create a story for your group: This is where we came from. This is who we are. This is what we do. This is what we stand for. These are our goals.Might sound a little silly, but I reviewed the research on the power of stories in my own book and itâs more than compelling. (The research, not my book⦠Okay, well, *I* think my bookâs compelling too, but Iâm biased. Anyway, the research on stories is definitely compelling.)From Barking Up The Wrong Tree:Stories are the invisible undercurrent that promotes success in a shocking number of the most important areas of life. What best predicts the success of romantic relationships? Itâs not sex or money or having the same goals. Researcher John Gottman realized that just hearing how the couple told the tale of their relationsh ip together predicted with 94 percent accuracy whether or not theyâd get divorced. Whatâs the best predictor of your childâs emotional well-being? Itâs not great schools, hugs, or Pixar movies. Researchers at Emory University found that whether a kid knew their family history was the number-one indicator. Who finds their careers meaningful and fulfilling? Hospital cleaners who saw their jobs as âjust a jobâ didnât derive any deep satisfaction from their careers. But cleaners who told themselves the story that this was their âcallingâ - and that their work helped sick people get better- saw their jobs as meaningful. You can tell me Batmanâs origin story. Where he came from. Who he is. What he does. What he stands for. What his goals are. If the story of a fictional crimefighting billionaire in tights gets real estate in your gray matter then maybe your work team and family deserve one too, eh?(To learn 6 rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, click here.)Okay, weâve learned a lot. Letâs round it all up and learn how all this leads to creating the most important type of team there isâ¦Sum upHereâs what the best teams and families all do: Build Safety: Not the âHard Hat Areaâ kind. The âitâs okay to say something stupidâ kind. Share Vulnerability: Did I mention my blog posts sometimes have typos? May those errors make you trust me all the more. Establish Purpose: âSo whatâs your story?â is now a very serious question. When you create safety, allow vulnerability and have a purpose, guess what? You have a culture. And a strong culture isnât just some fluffy business term - it dramatically affects the bottom line. From The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:A strong culture increases net income 756 percent over eleven years, according to a Harvard study of more than two hundred companies. But having those three things also creates something elseâ¦During Danâs interviews with the SEALs, IDEO, the Upright Citizens Brigade and other top performing groups, one word came up again and again. The word that they all used to describe themselvesâ¦A family. And after four years of research, Dan found that he was applying the team principles he learned with his own âgroup.âFrom The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups:At home, I parented a little differently: I talked less and focused more on seeking ways to create belonging. (Card games are the absolute best.)So three simple things can make most any group function more effectively⦠but I have a sneaking suspicion thereâs more to be gained than just that.To be among people who make you feel safe. To be surrounded by those who accept your weaknesses. And to be united alongside others with a meaningful purposeâ¦Sounds a lot like a prescription for happiness as well.Join over 320,000 readers. Kids today want men to be master of the house and women to stay home
Kids today want men to be master of the house and women to stay home Kids today want men to be master of the house and women to stay home A startling new study finds that millennials are not as modern as we assume compared to older generations when it comes to women and work.According to two sociologists for the Council on Contemporary Families, more millennials believe that men should be breadwinners and that a womanâs place should be in the home. Millennials were defined by the study as people born between 1982 and 2000.Looking at high school surveys over the past 40 years, the researchers found that in 1994, 58% of the high school seniors surveyed disagreed with the claim that men should work and women should stay at home for âthe best household arrangement.âBut by 2014, that number had decreased and only 42% disagreed with the idea gendered family roles. More high schoolers in 2014 thought that âthe husband should make all the important decisions in the familyâ than high schoolers in 1976.Workplace equality - but not family equalityBut in an interesting contradiction, the majority of millennials belie ve that even though men should be in charge at home, men and women should be equal at work. The number of high schoolers who believe that â[a] woman should have exactly the same job opportunities as a manâ has increased from 76% in 1976 to nearly 90% for the generations that followed.Likewise, more young people in 2014 - 76%- believe that âa working mother can establish just as warm and secure a relationship with her children as a mother who does not workâ than in 1976, when fewer than half of young people in 1976.Men should do more choresResearchers found the results âpuzzlingâ as to why millennials were regressing back to the 19th century idea of âseparate spheresâ where women cared for the private sphere of children and the home, while men got to engage in the public sphere of being the âachiever outside the home.âUnder the logic of separate spheres, women are born to be mothers and wives and men are born to be providers. What they concluded: you can believe â a woman should have exactly the same job opportunities as a manâ and still think her place should be at home if you still believe, deep down in your heart, that there are inherent differences between men and womenâs capabilities.Under this attitude of âegalitarian essentialism,â women can choose to do anything, but they are more likely to choose work thatâs âmore consistent with their identity as women.âWhat the researchers concluded is that we need to break the belief that capability is defined by gender. That belief dictates that women are more suited for housework and work in the domestic sphere. How to make the home feel more equal? That starts with men doing more chores: âAchieving equity within families requires men to take on tasks that are culturally devalued (cleaning, laundry, and to a lesser extent cooking),â the researchers said.Study finds that men are threatened by womenâs earning powerOne other theory as to why this may be happening: womenâs adva ncement in the workforce is a threat to men. They then lash out about their economic loss by contributing less to the household, refusing to do âwomenâs work.âA 2012 study found that men who earned less money than their wives also did less housework than men who earned more than their wives. In a separate study on this perceived threat, researcher Dan Cassino found that âmenâs political views polarize more when it seems like they are losing groundâ as the dominant force in politics. The problem: this kind of friction is only more likely to be apparent. Around 15% of men in the U.S. make less than their partners do and even bringing up spousal income with them becomes a touchy subject. During the 2016 U.S. presidential primaries, Cassino, the researcher, asked men in New Jersey about the candidates. The ones who were reminded that women may make more than men were less likely to support presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. One consistent conclusion that we can make from these studies? Gender relations may be less of a straight line towards progress and more of a circle.

How to recover when you fumble an interview
How to recover when you fumble an interview How to recover when you fumble an interview You didnât think it was possible, but you found it - your dream job. According to the description of the position, the role plays to all of your skills and gives you the chance to make a real difference in an industry that matters to you. It will open opportunities for you to learn new things to advance your career. And the salary and benefits donât look bad, either! Now, your only challenge is making the job yours. Nailing the interview is obviously a key part of landing any new role, but what happens when things donât go perfectly? Is there room to recover? After an interview fumble, is the dream job still within your reach? According to data from LinkedIn, 55 percent of working professionals admit to making a mistake that affected an interview or their career, so itâs clear that perfection is far from the norm.LinkedIn career expert Blair Decembrele tells us that it can be tricky to distinguish mistakes that are bound to be âinterview killersâ from slip-ups that c an be more easily forgotten. After all, every interview and interviewer is different, so itâs hard to say once and for all which fumbles are actually recoverable. Still, relationships are everything when on the job search.âHaving a strong professional community built on real relationships will always be helpful when trying to turn things around,â asserts Decembrele.âBe sure to contact colleagues and friends working at the company when youâre interviewing.âBefore you even set foot in the office for the interview, do everything you can to establish positive vibes with people who already work for the organization. If you donât have personal friends who work there, do some homework to find out if there are friends of friends who do - or if there might be some other connection you can leverage in the application process. Even without those connections, you can ensure that the existing team has a positive view of you as a candidate with friendly, well-written emails and cove r letters that may help tip the scales back in your direction if you mess up come interview time.Beyond that, your best bet in recovering from an interview fumble is to simply apologize in the moment. If your interviewer corrects a statement youâve made about the company or if you forget their name (yikes!), itâs best to acknowledge the error ASAP. Per LinkedIn, just over half of working professionals think that apologizing privately and in person is the best way to recover from a fumble, and nearly as many feel that handling it right then is the way to go. If you canât come up with a good answer to a more challenging question during the interview, you may want to follow up that stumble with an email as well.âTake an opportunity to thank the interviewer for the excellent question, request some time to consider your answer, and come back with a response later in the day,â Decembrele suggests.âYou can send a more well-considered response with your thank-you note.âIf youâ re in the midst of an interview and feel like your nerves are going to get the best of you or make you lose your train of thought, the best way to get things back on track is simply to relax. Yes, we know this is easier said than done, but itâs a great approach if you want your interviewer to forget any weirdness from earlier in the conversation so they can simply be impressed by the brilliant responses that are still to come out of your mouth. Take a deep breath, look at your resume to help you refocus, and forge ahead. Itâs okay to jot down a few notes if it helps keep your mind from wandering as well.âYou can write down a one- or two-word prompt for each question as itâs asked, so you can refer back to it should you lose your train of thought,â says Decembrele.âOr, if youâve been distracted, acknowledge the distraction, ask the interviewer to repeat the question, and get yourself back on track.âAn interview mistake doesnât have to mean the end of your journey to nab your dream job - itâs all in how you take charge in handling it.This article first appeared on Brit+Co.

Hired! A Teaching Moment, an Ideal Job
Hired! A Teaching Moment, an Ideal Job Hired! A Teaching Moment, an Ideal Job Renea Morris, a PR director, waited for the right opportunity to make a difference. When Renea Morris saw the job listing for an executive director of communications and marketing at Ohio University, she knew it was the job she wanted.âThat job started to speak to me; it was exactly what I wanted to do in terms of level of responsibility, and what they were looking for fit my background,â she said. âI thought it was a match made in heaven.âShe threw her name into the pool and received a call from the recruiter. âAfter that conversation, I said, âThis is where I need to be.â I didnât apply for another job.âMorris, 44, began her job search after coming to the realization that it was time to start thinking about what to do with âthe second half of her life.âThis was not the first time the public-relations professional (who most recently had held the position of director of PR at Convergys, a human resources and customer relationship-management consultancy in Cincinn ati,) had thought about the next step in her career. A few years ago she started a job search, using MktgLadder and other job sites to look for a new position.âI realized I wasnât ready,â she said. âI hadnât quite honed in on why I was looking for a job. Sometimes you have a bad day, and that turns into a knee-jerk reaction.âMorris thought about all her work experience and realized that it was her work at a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, as manager of corporate communications for the Youth Job Awareness Project that had left a lasting impression on her.âThe experience in that non-profit, which allowed me to try to save the world, taught me something about myself: Iâm mission-minded, and I do like having a cause that Iâm passionate about.âMorrisâs experience working with inner-city high school and college students in Los Angeles prepared her for the working world and she considered it âa once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,â but she left when her husband was offered a job in Cincinnati.âLife happens,â she said. âWe had two little ones, and Cincinnati is a great place to raise a family.âOnce they landed there, she took a job with Cincinnati Bell that led to the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new company called Convergys, which was spun off from Cincinnati Bell. In her 13 years at Convergys Morris worked her way up to director in the marketing and communications department, handling media relations, crisis communication and internal communications for 75,000 employees. She enjoyed the job, but there was still that little voice telling her that there was something more she could do.Morrisâs two oldest children were now in college and two younger children in high school. It was a good time to return to âmission-mindedâ work. After the false-start job search a few years ago, âI did a few things differently,â she said. First, she made an investment in the job search.Getting up to speedâI got my accredi tation in public relations (from the Public Relations Society of America ), so I could brand myself, so I could get ready to go out there and see what I could do,â said Morris. âI got my resume together, and did all those normal things like posting them on several boards, including MktgLadder. My husband looked at my resume and said I should rethink it. So I used MktgLadderâs service. The questions the person at Ladders asked me helped to make it shine. It really did tell a story in a way that I thought, âWow, this is going to get the attention of someone for a higher-level position.â âOnce she got the attention of Ohio University, she strategized. Going after one job single-mindedly was a risk, but Morris had a secret weapon: her husband, who acted as her job coach.âI had never been involved in an opportunity with a higher education executive search,â she said. âHe put me through what questions to be prepared to answer and what to ask. Also, because Ohio Universit y is a public institution, this wasnât a completely confidential search. I could see who I was competing against at various stages of the interviews. Working with him, I was able to pull together a strategy for how I would approach the interviews.âMorris says her husband, who works in sales and has helped friends with job searches in the past, treated her like any other person who would come to him for help. âIf I wasnât doing something in the best way, he would tell me.âThe recruiter called her in October; by the end of December, she had accepted the position, overseeing a staff of about 25 and reporting directly to University president Roderick McDavis. Sheâll start in early February. And in joining the staff of Ohio University, Morris will close the circle she started many years ago in Los Angeles. âThe implications of what I can achieve at Ohio University are far reaching,â she said. âMy position affords me the opportunity to bring the world to Ohio University, whether through its students, faculty, academic or research programs, and leave a legacy full of promise for future generations.âI didnât go into this with stars in my eyes,â she continued. âThere is a lot of work that needs to be done; a lot of challenges ahead. But oh, what a great opportunity.â

If you want to be brilliant, you need to be bored
If you want to be brilliant, you need to be bored If you want to be brilliant, you need to be bored In a world where entertainment is just a smartphone away, youâre constantly connected and you never have to be bored. There will always be some new app to tap through, a social media post to like, or a notification to read. But a new book is arguing that we lose key moments for creativity, reflection, and growth when we donât let our minds space out and wander away from technology.Manoush Zomorodi, the host and managing editor of WNYCâs Note to Self podcast, is arguing in her new book âBored and Brilliant,â that we need monotony to be great. She uses her own life as an example, noting that the last great idea she had to host a podcast came when she was bored and âpushing that damn strollerâ in the early months of motherhood. Talking to neuroscientists, Zomorodi learned that thereâs a scientific reason why her brain was most creative when she was bored. When weâre bored and doing humdrum administrative tasks, our body goes into autopilot mode and thatâs where our brainâs synapses start firing in new ways.âI learned that in the default mode is when we connect disparate ideas, we solve some of our most nagging problems, and we do something called âautobiographical planning.â This is when we look back at our lives, we take note of the big moments, we create a personal narrative, and then we set goals and we figure out what steps we need to take to reach them,â she said in her TED talk on the topic. But in a modern, connected workplace, idle time is seen as counterintuitive and multitasking hustling is prized. You can always be writing more emails, clicking open more tabs, and attending more meetings. But that line of thinking goes against science. In her book, Zomorodi cites neuroscientists who have found that the more we switch our attention, the higher our stress levels go. Worse, the game of attention is rigged against us as our brains compete with engineers, whose success is measured by how much attention we spend on their device s.âOn one side is a human being whoâs just trying to get on with her prefrontal cortex, which is a million years old and in charge of regulating attention. Thatâs up against a thousand engineers on the other side of the screen, whose daily job is to break that and keep you scrolling on the infinite feed,â ex-Google designer Tristan Harris told Zomorodi in her book.Boredom is where the best ideas are bornZomorodiâs findings are backed by other studies on the value of daydreaming and boredom. When University of Central Lancashire psychologists forced a group of participants to complete the mind-numbing task of copying numbers out of the phone book, those 15 minutes of monotony paid off in a later creative experiment. It was the bored group that figured out the most uses for a polystyrene cup, not the group that got to do the creative task right away.âBoredom at work has always been seen as something to be eliminated, but perhaps we should be embracing it in order to enhanc e our creativity,â the researchers concluded. So if you want to get more creative, you need to embrace the mind-wandering opportunities boring tasks give you.Get creative while you sleepIf you want to carry this practice into your sleep, try keeping a dream diary. One study found that people who kept dream diaries got more creative in the daytime, because remembering your weird, abstract subconscious helps you expand your definition of whatâs possible.Proverbs warn against the dangers of idle minds, but what these new case studies show is that boredom is not always the sign of a lazy mind.At their best, those moments of idle solitude can be the foundation for building new connections in your brain - and one of these connections could even be the start of a great new idea.
